Ruben Abrica came to East Palo Alto in 1979 and helped lead the movement to incorporate the city, serving on its first City Council from 1983 to 1988 and helping pass its landmark Rent Stabilization Law. Born in Jalisco, Mexico and raised in Tijuana, he built a career in education and community organizing that led him to become East Palo Alto's first Latino Mayor in 2006. Today, as Vice Mayor, he continues that decades-long commitment to housing rights, education equity, and community health across the city he helped found.

From organizing tenants to serving as Vice Mayor, Ruben has spent his career fighting displacement and expanding affordable housing. He's not done — with one more term, he'll keep negotiating strong community benefits so renters and owners alike can stay and thrive in East Palo Alto.

Ruben believes real public safety starts with trust, and as Mayor, he brought police, fire, schools, and community leaders together for regular safety gatherings to strengthen communication and preparedness. If re-elected, he'll keep building on that work to create safer neighborhoods and closer ties between residents and public safety partners.

Ruben wants every generation in our community to thrive — from more recreation opportunities for young people to stronger support and services for our seniors. He's also working to give youth a real voice in City Hall and open doors for residents to learn new skills close to home.

Ruben is committed to repairing and rebuilding the essentials our community relies on, from the library and streets to water pipes and storm drains. He also supports clearing abandoned cars for more parking and bringing new business opportunities to the Ravenswood Business District.

East Palo Alto has always moved forward — overcoming obstacles since before we incorporated in 1983, and finding solutions together as new challenges arise. Let's keep that momentum going, with a City Government that stays transparent and responsive to the voices and needs of our residents, youth, adults, and elders.
